This College Basketball Preview Makes Strange Bedfellows

Crean Pie can't believe that Drew and Seal are working together and this is the greatest screen grab ever.
We're all still balls deep in football--and rightfully so--but college basketball season starts up this week and I think that a good majority of the regulars here enjoy the sport.  It's not just a February and March thing, dammit.  In FACT, we are going to up our coverage here this season as Prime will be responsible for the Pac-12 North while Burke can handle beat writing the Pac-12 South.  Seal will take the SEC.  Iceman has the ACC for some reason.  Ide can take the Big East.  Mr. Ace can do the Big 12 because fuck him.  And everyone else can collectively cover the Big Ten.  Deal?  Anyway, we have two assholes who follow college hoops the most here and while they always make for entertaining adversaries, they are joining up today to preview the shit out of the 2014-15 season.  Dickheads, the floor is yours...

Q: Give your legions of fans here an OVERRATED and an underrated team based on the preseason AP rankings?
(Seal) OVERRATED - Michigan. Lost too many people, too young, and no depth in the best conference is not promising. Beilein is a decent coach, but he has his work cut out for him this season with this roster.
Underrated - Strictly going off the rankings, a team that I love to be in the top 10 all year, that isn't in the top 10 now is Iowa State. Love their offensive production, bringing back a healthy Georges Niang is huge. Their gym is a really tough place to win. They will challenge Kansas for the BIG 12 Title.
(Drew) OVERRATED Team - Virginia. I don't really get how they are preseason # 9. I get that they had a nice year last year...but, they don't have anybody even projected to get drafted next year and their best player is a guy who in Malcolm Brogdon who seems to make all of the UNDERRATED lists. So, how can not a team so highly thought of not even have a guy who gets a lot of publicity. Overrated FO SHO.
Underrated - UCLA. Somehow the PAC-12 has only one team ranked and that is #2 Arizona. UCLA has two first rounders on their team in Norman Powell and Trevon Looney. They have a chance to win a decent amount of games in that shitty conference and grab a nice seed

Q. That Jahlil Okafor kid at Duke looks like a goddamn STUD. Any other freshmen to keep an eye out for?
(Seal) Homer pick - Karl Towns (UK). Kids sick. Non-homer pick - Stanley Johnson (Zona)
(Drew) My favorite freshman not named Okafor is Cliff Alexander at Kansas. Dude is a FREAK. He's going to be a dunking/shot blocking machine in Lawrence.
(editor's note: 18 year olds named Karl, Stanley, and Cliff?  What fucking year is this???)

Q. Give us a sleeper team...not necessarily an underrated team but somebody that you think could make a big run in March.
(Seal) Once again, I love that Iowa State team if they can stay healthy. Also, I think Northwestern finally gets in the tourney this year and wins a game or two.
(Drew) Utah. I'm gonna stick with my PAC-12 thing here...Utah has the ability to beat everyone in the conference not named Arizona and comes with a lot of experience and a 1st rounder in Delon Wright.
(ed. I fucking love Iowa State...Fred Hoiberg is going to go down as one of the best coaches of all time)

Q. I think that the Player of the Year Award is the Naismith. Who wins that?
(Seal) Okafor - no doubt.
(Drew) Okafor. Real boring choice, but kid can do it all...is smart/well spoken and plays for Duke. Usually you combine those ingredients and you get a ton of votes.

Q. Any big name coaches getting fired?
(Seal) No but this controversy at UNC is interesting. I'm wondering, with how things have been recently if they get big time busted if they turn that program inside out and start over.
(Drew) This is a tough one in basketball as a shitty season with a decent tourney run as saved many jobs. Although, Purdue doesn't seem to care about sports...I could see Matt Painter getting fired this year. They have been pretty bad for a few years now....have not been able to take advantage of Crean Pie's shittiness....and the only B1G team that they are for sure finishing above is Rutgers. At some point it might just be time to cut the cord with him and try to gain some control on your basketball mad state....before Indiana fires Crean too.
(ed. Yeah, come on, Crean Pie is fucking gone...his players would rather Tony Stewart each other than play for him)

Q. Which conference ends up being the most ELITE in 2014-15?
(Seal) It's a toss up between the B1G and ACC. Both are very deep. ACC has more rock star teams, but the B1G is always competitive and gritty.
(Drew) It will be the ACC this year. Duke and UNC are loaded....although I don't think highly of Virginia...the media thinks of them as top 10...and you still have Louisville and Syracuse. It's been a while since the ACC has been stacked...but, they are back this year.
(ed. The MAC is always the answer to this)

Q. Give me your thoughts and predictions for YOUR team (that means Seal for UK and Drew for OH)
(Seal on Kentucky) Calipari and this 2 squad platoon struggles a little out of the gate (see 2014 Cleveland Cavs) and everyone pisses their pants about it. But with 9 McD's All Americans and pretty much two starting 5's, they will be fine. Returning the Harrison twins, Poythress, Cauley Stein and Dakari Johnson is huge - and odd that we had so many return. Get ready to hate a really good UK team again this year!
(Drew on Ohio Buckeyes) I'm pretty high on this OSU team. I worry about where our scoring is going to come from a bit...and we are still a year away from having an ELITE big man come in. But, adding one of the best Freshman classes in the country to go along with Scott, Slam Thompson and Temple transfer Anthony Lee...will make for a very fun team. I'm not sure how fast we will start...but, I think this is definitely a top 4 seed by the end of the year. The two biggest studs of the Freshmen class are PG/SG D'Angelo Russell and PF Keita Bates-Diop. Both are showing to be legit based on practice reviews and scrimmages. Hopefully, a Buckeye pulls a Hoosier and runs over Amir with a car so we don't have to watch one final year of him. I'm hoping for a 2nd place finish in the B1G...but, 3rd place is probably more likely.

Q: How about your Final Four and National Champion?
(Seal) UK, Duke, Iowa St, Villanova. UK Champs.
(Drew) Kentucky, Wisconsin, Duke, Louisville. Kentucky wins...anything short of a championship with a monster regular season is a disappointment with the guys that came back to school and the incoming Freshmen. The front line is just silly size wise.

Thanks, guys!  We've got a UK sweep from the experts.  My RedHawks are picked last in the East (again!) and lost a scrimmage to powerhouse Edinboro last weekend but I still think that we're going to surprise some folks this season.  We are fixing to play the 40 Minutes of Hell style which is my favorite brand of hoops.  Grinding out half court possessions is the worst. Either way, let's get ready to enjoy an Aaron Craft-free season!  Who will be this year's Most Hated Scrappy White?  Is it Spike Albrecht?  Or maybe "Wisconsin"?  PROBABLY!

Fair enough. Although you lost all credibility when you devoted an entire post to interviewing Dut.

That's all.

Touche!

Seal picking Northwestern to not only make the tournament but to also win a game or two might be the boldest take ever given here. Someone is in love with Chris Collins!

Am I allowed to say that I hate Willie Cauley-Stein? I just think that he is a terrible player. That is all.

Is "40 Minutes of Hell" a description of what it's like to watch a Redhawk game? If so, I'm buying it.

I see the Redhawks come to Columbus this year.

I'm pretty high on the Buckeyes. It looks like they will be an up tempo team and use the athletes that they have to get out and push things. Russell looks to be a star in the making. I think they will push Wisconsin this year and be a top 3 seed come tourney time.

Backbreaking Glory Hole last night. Way to let a 4th string QB put together to long TD drives, NIU. I hat #MACtion

I need some coffee.

Exactly so you better get used to it. Hopefully, our full court press game isn't as racist as when Nolan Richardson ran it.

Matta teams haven't played up tempo in a coon's age but you don't have any terrible honkies clogging shit up anymore so maybe you won't be a horrible watch this season.

Yeah, it took my a minute to remember the last time OSU played an up tempo game. It would be nice to average more than 70 points a game this year. B1G basketball, for as good as it is, is boring as fuck. You can appreciate good defense, but there is zero other conference that, as a whole, has mastered the art of using the full shot clock.

I really like the White Knights of Wisconsin. Those boys are going to be tough to beat, and Frank Kaminsky should walk away with B1G POY, and possibly challenge Okafor for the AP POY.

I should be the ACC guy since I actually pay attention to the ACC conference on a regular basis. Big East? Villanova is easily the only team worth mentioning. James Bell is gone, but Jay Wright seems to get those boys to play well. Creighton lost Douggy Fresh, and Marquette is being coached by that floor slapping Polack from Duke. Georgetown had a really good recruiting class, but if I remember correctly, is still being coached by that black asshole who still runs the Princeton offense, so fuck them.

Michigan hasn't finished outside the Top 25 since....2011...maybe 2010. Belein is the fucking GOAT and don't you forget it.

B1G is down this year so the Fuckeyes could definitely finish 2nd. They have a lot of pieces to get working together, though.

Russell has indeed been blowing up since I wrote this....even had Woj at Yahoo! tweeting about how NBA scouts are raving about him.

G$....speaking of your boy Craft...sounds like he's about to be a Golden State Warrior.

Ape...I almost listed Michigan as my UNDERRATED...but couldnt get past the glaring holes in the frontline.

G$ - that's understandable... he really isn't very athletic and has zero offensive game... but being 7 feet tall and able to jump helps in Cal's offense and just being in the college game. That's the only reason he is somewhat decent. It would be like putting Ryan Hollins back in college.

(editor's note: 18 year olds named Karl, Stanley, and Cliff? What fucking year is this???)

Now that's some funny shit, G$!

Doesn't Chris Bosh look like a Cliff? Very weird.

GMoney said...

Ryan Hollins couldn't even start for a college.

Speaking of white guys possibly being in the NBA, anyone else see that Mitch McGary-Hoffman-Durham has like a billion pet snakes and just lets them slither all over him? What a fucking weirdo.

Ide, that is why I have you covering the Big East. Keep complaining and I'll shove the A-10 up your urethra, too.

Mr. Ace said...

Ide, that's some sports writer dinosaur talk. The B1G has 5 teams in the Top 100 of possessions per game. The B1G's style of play doesn't differ much from any other conference.

Seriously though, I know not all McDonald All-Americans pan out to be studs, but NINE on one team? NINE? Come on, Calipari is a fucking bad ass recruiter. Will be interesting to see how good this team is come February/March.

Seal

GMoney said...

If you're looking for people to say nice things about John Calipari, this is probably not the site for you. Insults and slander though? Now you're on the trolley!

Believe me, I would never come here to get compliments regarding the best recruiter in the history of the game for the best program in the history of College Hoops. Just making a point. The success speaks for itself.

Wasn't Michigan supposed to be OVERRATED last year too? When you think about what they lost going into this season compared to what they lost 2 years ago, it shouldn't effect them too much. GR3 was good but not great and Stauskas wasn't nearly the player Burke was. And Michigan played all last year without McGary so losing him shouldn't really matter. Beilein arguably gets the most out of his players compared to any coach in college basketball. He doesn't get the blue chip guys the same way other coaches do but has had lottery picks in the last 2 NBA drafts. The guy is a masterful player developer. They'll be fine.

Slow...off topic...but why do you hate Oregon football so much?

Good question, Drew... In which I think you might actually finally like an answer of mine.

Everything about the team and program bugs me. I hate the pub they get for the jerseys. When an article on espn.com or on my facebook feed is regarding the newest style of jerseys that Oregon is wearing for this weeks game, it just pisses me off. Who gives a fuck.

But most of all, I think they are the most OVERRATED program in the nation. I think they are in a mediocre conference and do not play a tough out of conference schedule (no one really does, so I'll give them that). Every single year they lose a game that, if they are such an ELITE team, they have no business losing. They lose huge games when it matters, and no one ever seems to care or notice. The media and selection committee (whatever they are called) just once again proved my point by putting them ahead of an unbeated FSU team (who I hate as well). Oregon lost AT HOME to a team that isn't very good! They do this every year. How do they get away with this. Now, im going to say this, as not being a die hard buckeye fan, but I think this isn't very different than Ohio State. Ohio state is in a mediocre conference and has one bad loss and needs everything in the world to work for them to get in the playoff... and where is Oregon? Number 2 team. How? They are eerily similar to OSU/B1G situation a lot of years and for some reason they get so much more respect. I just don't understand it.

Oregon is SOFT. Always have been. But the Pac-12 is way better and Arizona is at least a pretty decent team with the best coach in America. But yeah, they get the benefit of the doubt for some reason that doesn't make sense.

Prime99 said...

Chip says stop being a fag and bask in the greatness he built. He says it's weird that you want to have buttsex with the dirtiest college coach ever, but hold a grudge against the uptempo and fashionable Nike Ducks.

Remember, his words, not mine.

GMoney said...

Anyone else find Frank Kaminsky wildly OVERRATED? I mean, I expect Sam DeKKKer to be the most valuable white man on the Badgers this season. I feel like Franklin's tournament run is making people think he's better than he is.

T. Iceman said...

Whoah, Seal. The Pac 12 has 5 ranked teams this year. They're a strong conference. And Oregon's "bad loss at home" to a "team that isn't very good" is actually ranked 14th in the country. There's a big difference between beating 4 ranked teams and beating 1 ranked team when comparing Oregon to Ohio. Also a big difference between losing to the 14th ranked team at home and a really bad VT team at home. That's why Oregon is in the top 4 and Ohio isn't.

Anonymous said...

I knew I'd get it from Michigan fans for using the Ohio State comparison... Your point though is exactly why I am not a huge college football fan. The rankings are just as much bullshit as the "playoff" selection. No fucking way is Arizona the 14th best team in the nation. They wouldn't even be in the top half of the best teams in the SEC. That division is shit... and it can never be proven because their teams will play poop teams each year in the Garbage Bowl.

I understand you can't have a "march madness" type of playoff structure, but the new structure is nothing different that the BCS... its still all about money and people PICKING who plays in the big games. You want in? Win your conference... put all conference winners and maybe a couple at larges in a tourney. Take away a couple of the pointless games at the beginning of the year and start in conference play earlier to take care of the longer season/potential multiple playoff games.

Off track of the Oregon hate, which I still think they are OVERRATED... but that's why I can't love college football.

Basically what I am saying is that it's a popularity contest, and I don't understand why Oregon is so popular every year.

Seal

T. Iceman said...

I suppose you could make an argument that Arizona isnt as good as their 14th rank. But you also can't argue they're definitely a top 25 team. And a loss at home to a top 25 team shouldn't be a death sentence. Especially when they've beaten 4 ranked teams. You can hate Oregon all you want and most times I would probably agree with you about them being OVERRATED. But this year doesn't support that theory. They deserve to be in the top 4.

Anonymous said...

Slow....I can see that side for some hate.

G$...I think Kaminsky is pretty legit. Nigel Hayes will probably be a stud for them too.

I just have a hard time buying a guy that looks like he does being ELITE. White people are the worst.

GMoney said...

Just going to put this here because it fits with today's topic and Gene Keady is hilarious...

“It was ugly,” Keady told Doyel during a telephone interview. “Everyone was always asking, ‘What is it? Why are you doing it?’ I did it because I was on TV. I did it because I was going bald. I thought I looked gorgeous with the combover. Of course, it was very ugly.”

Perhaps even more surprising than the fact that Keady was in denial over the combover is the fact that he revealed that he spent approximately $600 per week to maintain the ridiculous look.

Keady said that he brought in his personal hairdresser twice a week to work on the combover. A difficult task to charge even the most gifted hairstylist, the poor woman resorted to using hair dye, cream, and shockingly, hair extensions.

“I had extensions,” Keady admitted. When asked to clarify, the coach didn’t back down.
