Open Forum: The 2014 NBA Draft

OH CANADA, CLE STANDS ON GUARD FOR THEEEEEEEE!!!
There may be a day where our Cleveland Cavaliers rue the day that they played it safe and passed on Joel Embiid, but they just couldn't do it.  I agree with all of the analysts.  JoJo has the highest ceiling BY FAR.  But the Cavs can't punt the #1 pick two years in a row.  They had to play it safe this year.  Fortunately, Andrew Wiggins is one HELL of a consolation prize.  Everyone has had a full year to pick apart his game and find minor warts but don't forget the FACT here:

Andrew Wiggins is a goddamn STUD who does EVERYTHING.   Sure, people weren't always a big fan of his aggressiveness at Kansas but he should have never been in college anyway.   He was always an NBA player and unlike Fatty Parker, he plays both ends of the court very, very well.  This just in, the Cavs don't have a lot of gritty defenders.  The FACT is that now the Cavaliers have three dynamic wing scorers.  That's a good spot to be in.  FYI, the Cavs aren't trying to draft their "Jordan" because we already have our franchise player.  We're trying to get Kyrie his Pippen.  I think that we have.

Like I said at the top, there is a decent chance that will passing on the big guy who has KILLED LIONS in his past, but we are fine.  Have you not heard that LeBron is coming back!!!  Other thoughts from the Draft:

*The stone-faced post-pick Embiid still was hilarious but wasn't really accurate.  Just typical conservative media trying to make a talented black man look like an idiot.

*Dante Exum's dad is Perd Hapley.  Best Tweet of the night.  YA HERD?

*Bill Simmons is the absolute worst.  Here's his schtick: if he doesn't like your team or have a buddy in the front office that leaks him info, he will BURY everything that your team does.  He does this all the time.  And he is fucking terrible.  I don't know why ESPN keeps stuffing his stupid face and voice down our throats.

*Marcus Smart and Rajon Rondo get into a fist fight before the end of the first practice.  GUARANSHEED.  Poor Brad Stevens...he's going to need to hire Suge Knight as his bodyguard just for team flights.

*Congratulations, Prime, your hometown heroes finally replaced Jimmer with Canadian Jimmer!  Needless to say...YOU ON!

*Speaking of white STUDS (remember that dating show?  STUDS was not ELITE), the Bulls traded for Dougie McBuckets which makes them way more likeable.   It should be a real hoot to watch him have to play defense for Thibs.  Then again, like I said on Wednesday, his ceiling is "tremendous bench scorer" and that's good because he will never start in Chicago.  Speaking of which, word is starting to leak on Twitter (IBN) that Carmelo to the Bulls is a done deal.  Take it for what it's worth but Bob loves to break stories and he does it more often than not.

*Mitch McGary-Hoffman-Durham is going to OKC.  Yeah, that's what is holding them back from beating the Spurs...an oaf with bad piss.  Nevertheless, I would have wanted the Cavs to take him at 33.

*LEBRON GETS HIS MAN!  THE LURE HAS BEEN CAST!  SHABAZZ WILL BE THE ONE TO BRING LEBRON BACK TO SOUF BEACH!  LURE LURE LURE!

*I'm going to cut this short now with chills down my spine and maybe a watery eye.  Goddamn you, NBA.  What you did for Isaiah Austin last night was the best thing ever.  That poor guy has had to put up with a ton of unavoidable shit in his life and you did the absolute rightest thing ever by drafting him into the NBA.  Best moment of the night.  That is up there with one of the best moments in the history of the NBA Draft.

Fire off your HOT TAEKS on anything today.  Draft?  Soccer?  It doesn't matter.  Just know that Floyd Mayweather put 100K on the Cavs to win the 2014-2015 title the other day.  Why?  No fucking clue but he must know something that no one else does.  All I know is that Coach Blatz (how I will spell it) and Andrew Wiggins = SUPER BOWL!!!

Three NBA posts in one week has finally taken it's toll on everyone.

Was the guy from Baylor the one that wore the glasses when he played?

That's him.

After everyone went to bed last night, the Cavs traded worst LeBron replacement ever, Alonzo Gee, to Charlotte for Brendan Haywood and the rights to PF Dwight Powell.

Dwight Powell is Canadian. Just move the team to Montreal already!

The Spurs won again.

Kyrie isn't staying.

Apparently pre knee injury Detroit pick Spencer Dinwittie was a late first round pick. One thing I know for sure...that last name is awful and I'm sure he's been ripped on before for it.

I was kinda surprised Detroit didn't take a chance on GR3 at 38. At that point in the draft everyone is a project with high upside. I guess the Pistons wanted to focus on Rodney Stuckey not playing ever again.

Cleanthony Early dropping that far was a pretty big shock to me. I though he should've been drafted in the first round.

Cue all Cavs fans talking themselves into a player they never wanted.

Can you please provide some back story or details on how you KNOW that Kyrie isn't staying, Ace? Or is that just a nonsensical prediction?

Best part of the night was easily the Isaiah Austin moment. It was pretty weird to watch a draft where the commish didnt get booed - and Silver proved again that he deserved the cheers. Best commish in sports right now, dont fuck it up.

Great pick by Philly at 3, IMO. For some reason I was instantly regretting not gambling on him, but owell. The Cavs actually made the move they were supposed to make - finally. I can't bitch about that. But back to Philly... how many guys can you draft that dont help you win today. They are so good at drafting for 2-4 years from now - and even draft guys that might never come back from Europe to play for them. It would be terrible to like that team.

"I think I should have went higher, and all those teams that passed on me will regret it." That'a boy, Julius.

The Cavs drafted Luke Harangody again with their second round pick. I can't fathom why you pass on Cleanthony Early right there. I dont care how many SF's we have.

There is no one worse than Bill Simmons, ever.

I love the Simmons, Rose and Bilas draft crew. Do the people that bitch about Simmons want Van Gundy and Jackson back...you know...former coaches that don't want to say anything bad that would offend teams or players...or do you want genuine reactions? I'll take the current crew all day erryday.

I'm not even going to pretend that I care about the Pistons 2nd round pick.

Wiggins was the right pick by the Cavs, but I think he will struggle quite a bit next year...not Anthony Bennett bad though.

How does the international thing work exactly? Can the NBA team that drafts them just tell them after two years or whatever that they want them and then it's up to the player if he wants to come over or not? Does the NBA team hold the rights to that player forever?

I enjoy local Sac radio after the Stauskus pick. One guy compared him to Peja, EVERYONE ELSE hated the pick. At least one or two guys had to have committed suicide after their calls.

I guess Melo to the Bulls. Still would rather get Kevin Love somehow, it sounds like that is unfortunately unlikely.

Bulls and Kings acquired 3 white guys between them. What are the odds?!

A lot to address here:

Ape on Kyrie--I think he resigns and he think he does it on day 1 that he can. Maybe I'm reading too much into this but he threw out the first pitch for the Indians two weeks ago and you usually don't do stuff like that if you already have one foot out the door. You do that when you are home. Then again, I could be reading too much into that.

Iceman on talking ourselves into a player that we never wanted--The fuck are you talking about? Are you talking about Wiggins? Once again, you apparently know the dumbest sports fans ever because NO ONE is against bringing in the best and healthy talented player in the draft who would have been the #1 pick in a lot of year's drafts. Quit being stupid and go talk yourself into Dinwiddie.

Seal on Joe Harris--Bro, relax...second round picks are nearly worthless. This kid is a winner though and is a more talented version of Delly.

Drew on Simmons--The panel as a whole is great because they all do their homework but Billy gets way too much mic time and his "superfan" schtick is really annoying and him always playing fantasy GM is just brutal. The Celtics were OBVZ winners! Yeah, OK, bruh whatever you say.

Damman on international players--The thing is, if you take one and stash him over in Europe then you own him but don't have to pay him (which is why the really good teams constantly do this). I believe that you own those rights for a really long time, too. I don't think that it's the team's call as to whether you ever come over to America.

Jeff Goodman's three winners from last night:
1. Chicago
2. Miami
3. Adam Silver

WTF???

LOL Q Ross!

Seems to me that WE ON is just killing it with NBA players while Thad is failing miserably. Better program.

Colin T is talking about how many of last night's picks have fathers. You can't make this up. He just loves this GUTTURAL talking point.

I haven't paid attention to the Kyrie sitch much recently. But it wasn't that long ago when stories were coming out about that lockerroom being toxic, partially because of the reports that Kyrie wants out. Brian Windhorst has been saying it since February and everything that I've seen says his source is legit. Maybe Kyrie changed his mind. I doubt it.

Bill Simmons is the new Rick Reilly.

Bulls win! Ya can't, ya won't, and ya don't stop!

Dougie's parenting situation is great. CHAMPIONSHIP!

T. Iceman said...

I'm pretty sure the NBA team holds the rights to an international player for something like 4 years. If the player has an international contract when you draft him, the international contract needs to be honored unless the NBA team can come to a buyout agreement with the international team. That's the way I understood it anyway.

What I meant, G$, is I saw almost every Cavs fan pretty much begging for Embiid or Parker at 1. Two months later and the same people I watched publicly state they did not want Wiggins (Seal being one) are saying they are all of a sudden okay with Wiggins. O RLLY? Funny how that works.

Talk all you want about Embiid being hurt and Parker not wanting to play in Cleveland. It doesn't change the fact that most Cavs fans had zero interest in Wiggins two months ago. Their opinion on Wiggins changed not because something came out about Wiggins being better than advertised. It was because Embiid got hurt and Parker hates Cleveland. So now you're left to talk yourself into a guy who was a distant 3rd on almost every fan's draft list.

As usual, I have nothing to say about the NBA.

Did anyone watch "Through the wormhole with Morgan Freeman: Is a zombie apocalypse possible?" I'm now terrified of germs and am almost convinced that it's ENTIRELY possible. Fucking Iceman was right all along.

Anonymous said...

So G$....You're saying you'd rather have someone boring like Van Gundy, Collins or Jackson say bland stuff all night long than Simmons? Simmons ripping the T-Wolves for selling draft picks and defending the practice was ELITE commentary.

LOLZ at Slow Seal wanting boring TV and no worthwhile opinions for a draft.

Are you going to quit the blog again?

LOLZ at my reading everyday, but not talking to people that would rather personally attack people rather than talk sports being, "quitting a blog".

I actually love Simmons podcasts when he has good guests... but G$ said it best - him playing fantasy GM with things that never happen is annoying. He compares everything to a Boston rival and openly favors certain team (including Boston). Not sure how anyone can enjoy that. Liking Jalen Rose the best on that set says something. Bilas is tolerable, but says the same thing about each guy: "he's not a great shoot, but very athletic".

Seal

T. Iceman said...

Team Hate Simmons.

He's a blatant Boston homer and lacks the ability to be objective when it comes to anything Boston related. Granted he knows his shit, but the Boston homer shit makes him almost unwatchable. Bilas and Rose are good. Simmons is awful.

GMoney said...

Why not just get rid of Mr. Celtic and have Rece, Jay, and Jalen? Would anyone complain?

For the record, I never wanted Parker. It had everything to do with his religion though. What sort of turd doesn't want to be the #1 pick? Has this ever happened before? Fuck him.

Windhorst reported that awhile ago but has said very little about it since. Then again, he is always consumed with being LeBron's moufpiece. The Kyrie wanting to leave stuff was always manufactured crap from the NY media like Peter Vecsey. Again, I think that he takes the big extension before July 4th.

GMoney said...

I would bet a rib dinner on that but I don't want to bet on Dan Gilbert coming through for me.

Cakes said...

I used to love the Simmons mailbag but one can only take so many sports/80's movie comparisons. By the way, what the fuck is he doing on TV? He's not good at it.

More Drew/Seal spats please. I've missed those.

Seal wins this round because he isn't defending a guy who constantly talks about how 6 team/32 player trades are SO EASY with the ESPN trade machine! Why won't any team hire me!!!

Drew just misunderstood the definitions of entertaining and irritating. No big deal. It's correctable.
