Basically, the playoffs expand from 8 teams to 10 as each league will have an additional Wild Card team. The two WC teams will now have a one game playoff before the winner faces the overall 1 seed in each league. Simple, right? Personally, I think that this is a great idea and I’m glad that they are putting this to use immediately. It’s about time that Bud Selig did something right. Do you remember how amazing the final night of the MLB regular season was last year? Now imagine if the next night there were two more “loser leaves town” matches.
I like this for a variety of reasons.
1. It gives my Yankees more chances for titles.
2. Elimination games are the best.
3. I think that it eliminates the ban on intra-division series. So now the Yankees and Red Sox can play in the ALDS (which means only a possibility of 5 12 hours games!).
4. FINALLY, this is a way to reward the best team. It really makes no sense when you think about it. In theory, in a 7 game series, the best team should always come out on top. So how did baseball reward the best teams in the past? Oh, they shrunk series down to fluky five gamers and allowed wild card teams to go unpunished. This setup actually punishes wildcard teams. You DON’T get to set your pitching staff. You DON’T get any rest. You WILL burn some relievers. It's almost too beautiful for a perfectionist such as myself.
5. And finally obvz…
This is the way that it should be. If you can’t win your division, you should have to face more hardships than just home field advantage. You shouldn’t have the option of throwing your ace twice. Got a problem with that? Shit, you’re lucky they even let you two losers into the playoffs. Win your fucking division next year and quit being a flappy cunt.
Can you imagine how awesome it would be to have a night of WC play-in games that started with CC vs. Jered Weaver at like 4 pm and concluded with Lincecum vs. Strasburg (huge stretch but whatevs) at 7:30? That would be the best night ever. Actually, you know what; the night of the play-ins could likely be the most entertaining night of the season.
I actually think that the NFL should do something similar in which they add another Wild Card team to each conference. The #2 seed should not be getting a bye. It makes little sense to reward a team that was not the best. In conclusion, I like this move because it helps make the regular season and divisional races more important. Don’t worry, Indians and Cubs fans, this won’t affect you. Now let’s all head down to the clubhouse and get shit-faced!!!
