Ohio State Is Going To Win The National Title

I said "SHUT UP, NET FACE"
We sort of got started on this topic last week and I held off on my opinion to preserve this post.  And here it comes.  And it doesn't feel right but it needs to be said.  And as much as I hate having these feelings, I can't help but knowing that they are accurate and likely true.  As the title of this post states, Ohio State is going to win the national title in two months.  I think I'm going to be sick.

Drew has accused me here and in person of being a closet Ohio State basketball fan.  It took all of my inner strength not to rip out his throat.  But I do have to admit that this collection of guys aren't very hate-able.  Other than that waste of life shooting guard, they all seem like good guys.  In the past, it was easy to hate them.  Evan Turner was a whiny bitch, BJ Mullens was white trash, KoKo's mom tried to run the team, and Oden/Conley just used the school as a stepping stone to the NBA.  At least that is why I hated those teams.  But there is something different this year.  Buford could have left early but stuck around to get better (which I respect).  Lighty has fought through injuries to become a really good leader.  Aaron Craft plays the game the right way.  Lauderdale has set aside his crippling problem with premature baldness to bang for 15-20 minutes a game.  And Jared Sullinger has about the most "in-check" ego I've ever seen from an 18 year old kid about to become a millionaire (which is refreshing).  Damn Thad Matta for assembling a team of character!  I need more scumbags (besides Rat Boy) to root against!

At a bar on Saturday, I told Damman that I was writing this.  He was impressed that I would be so humbled to write something like this.  While getting into the idea surrounding this post, we both agreed that this team has NO weaknesses.  None.  Go ahead and try to think of one...you can't.  Sure, they are susceptible to deep teams that play fast and if they aren't shooting well from outside, they could be in trouble.  But I wouldn't be too worried about that.  Here are my reasons for why this team will be cutting down the nets in Houston come early April.

No more zone - Only cunts play zone.  Good teams with good coaching staffs play man-to-man.  This is why I hate Syracuse and always root against them.  When you have the athletes, you are wasting them by playing a pussy 2-3 zone.  It is fag-ball.  I have no respect for zone teams at all.  Their pussy defense was why I hated OSU over the last handful of years but they have scrapped that this season.  And it's why I have no respect for John Bielein (and he looks like he fucks dead kids).

Free throws - Other than Lighty, everyone on the floor at the end of games can be relied upon to make their freebies in the clutch.  How many times this year already have they iced games at the line?

Point guard play - You don't need a Chris Paul to win it all but you do need someone who can make plays.  Aaron Craft might be the team MVP.  The kid can play but then again, I'm a sucker for white kids dominating the point guard position.

Wings that can shoot AND get to the rim - We're going to just ignore the worst player in the nation on this one.  Dinosaur Head Buford has a wet jumper and while Lighty making threes are a miracle, he's never going to force anything and he finishes well at the rack.

Unselfish superstar - Sullinger sort of reminds me of Carmelo.  Not with the skill set but the sort of impact he makes as a freshman.  He can score at will but he's also smart enough to pass out of double teams.  A sneaky positive of his game is that he rarely gets into foul trouble.  Right now, most NBA mock drafts have him going fifth (which is proposterous), I see him using the tournament to get up into the top 2.

Defensive force in the middle - Dallas Lauderdale, other than having a badass name, is pretty terrible on the offensive end.  There is a reason why he doesn't even get passed to.  But on the other end, he rebounds and swats the shit into the upper deck.  He knows his role and that is important.  It's the same thing with that Thomas kid.  He knows that his job is to come and put up points.  So far, so good.

Experience counts - Yes, they count on freshmen.  But they also have good senior leaders in Lighty, Lauderdale, and Rat Boy.  Never forget that Ohio State gets everyone's best games which makes every game feel like a tourney game.  And that sort of thing helps come March.  When you've seen everything, nothing should surprise you in the tournament.

Who cares if they are winning games by 5 or less against crappy teams recently.  That just shows that they know how to close out close games.  And that makes them even more dangerous.  I've always said that I don't really think that Matta is the greatest coach out there, but he has sick deep and experienced talent that it shouldn't matter this March.

As I said earlier, I think a healthy Duke is probably a better team but who knows if Erving will be back.  A deep team with skilled bigs could present issues which makes me think that San Diego State could give them a good game.  Also, if they matched up in the Sweet 16 with a team like Missouri that plays 200 mph for 40 minutes, that could spell doom.  But I wouldn't worry too much about that.  Niche teams rarely advance far in the tournament.

So there you go, a nice post about the Buckeye Basketball team.  If it ends up being true, look at how smart I am!  If they choke, what an excellent reverse jinx I put on them!  I win either way (not really, the bandwagon fans will surely make my life a living hell).  I will be at the Michigan/Ohio State game on Thursday night.  The tickets are coming from the coaching staff (I had to give personal info to the NCAA!) so they better be courtside.  I want to be able to spit on Diebler and Zack Novak.

I knew you were a closet Buckeye basketball fan!

That being said, I didn't like this post. Very Ace-like attempt at the jinx.

You are spot on in regards to the likeability of the players of this team. It actually worries me a bit at how nice of guys they all are. When that punk Darius Morris on Michigan was talking mad shit into Lighty's ear a couple weeks ago, I could only think about how Turner would have gotten right in his face if he were still around and give him the crazy eyes. But, we don't really have that...or at least not yet.

We don't really have any weaknesses. But, I do think free throw shooting is a weakness of ours. Sure, we have iced games down the stretch...but, we are like 8th or 9th in the conference overall in free throw shooting. So, we are making games closer than they should be by missing them early on. That shit could cost us come tourney time.

In my opinion, there are a clear top three right now. OSU, Kansas and Pittsburgh....then Duke and Texas (I realize they won at Kansas...still think they are worse) after them.

You will be happy to know that I went to the ticketmaster site on Saturday to see what type of tickets were available for Michigan the only tickets that are left are singles in the upper bowl...so it's essentially already a sell out.

How is you going to ticketmaster ever going to make me happy?

Deangelo Hall for Heisman.

Novak will dominate on Thursday.

Michigan has played zone defense maybe twice this year, so fuck off.

My opinion still stays the same on the Fuckeyes. Good team. Top talent. They certainly aren't dominate. Think they depend on freshmen too much for my liking, but it can work(Syracuse).

Drew said...

Ace....the only thing Novack will dominate on Thursday will be the white trash power rankings.

GMoney said...

White trash rankings? Well, with michigan in town that does probably mean more than a few Tigers fans will be there and no one can out-trash a Tigers fan.

Here's why OSU won't win it all...their players make faggity videos to songs adored by 4th grade girls who haven't had periods yet.

But seriously, you don't want to be the #1 seed overall going into the NCAA tourny. The #1 overall doesn't have a very good success rate. I know you OSU fags don't think this matters but it does, obviously. Just like G$ says...if you're the best you get everyone's best. This is even more relevant come tourny time.

Drew said...

I don't want the # 1 overall seed because that means they go out East to Newark, NJ and I've already got tickets for the sweet 16 and elite 8 in New Orleans. Speaking of which...Dut...I need an e-mail from you with New Orleans suggestions.

With all of these teams losing though, I think it will be hard to not get the # 1 seed. The Buckeyes are definitely going to lose at some point here in the next few weeks...I just hope the first one isn't at Wisconsin due them already doing that to us in football.

Anonymous said...

How is that more relevant come tourny time? You are going to get everyone's best no matter what seed or what team you are playing considering it is lose and go home. So them being the overall one seed isnt going to make other teams play harder - they are going to give it their all against whatever opponent they draw, whether it is OSU or not.

The regular season is much more relevant for this arguement as teams seem to coast through the regular season until they have the number one team in the nation on their schedule. The fans, players, and coaches obviously are more hyped to play OSU than almost any other team on their schedule.

Drew - do you know what seeds/games are being sent to Cleveland for the first and second round (friday and sunday)? Myself and a few loyal readers will be in attendance.

I'm pretty sure Steelers fans dominate Tiger fans in the white trash category. Don't let Justin Verlander and his love for Mt Dew Baja Blast skew your opinions on Tiger fans.

Drew- all you need to know is Hand Grenades (at Tropical Isle), Hurricanes (at Pat O'brians), a bar called Razoos, buy beads in bulk and throw them at people from the balconies (I prefer the one at Bourbon Cowboy where you get 3 for 1 beers), and free drinks at the casino.

Iceman- is it really that obvious that you don't want the number 1 overall seed? Do you have any stats to back that up? I don't think teams try harder against the number 1 overall. Its the F'ing tournament. Teams bring their best shot every game even if they're playing against some shit school like Michigan.

Ohio State will definitely be in Cleveland, so you are a lock for 1/16 and 8/9. Lunardi's bracketology shows Pitt being a # 1 seed and playing in Cleveland too...So, that would be two 1/16 and two 8/9 matchups.

The Iceman said...

It's more relevant because only the 65 best teams get invited. One of the top 65 teams best game in the tourny is going to be a lot tougher to win then a team that didn't get invited to the tourny's best game in the regular season.

Since the 1st year of the NCAA tourny the tournament's top seed has one the whole thing 21 out of the 71 years. A 29% success rate isn't very promising.

Drew said...

I'd say 29% is decently promising. I bet that's the best percentage of any seed.

Anonymous said...

I agree - I wouldnt have expected the number to have been as high as 21/30%.

29% has to be the best odds of any seed. I can't believe OSU fans would want that!

Iceman is not doing well with his comments today.

The Iceman said...

The tournament has been around for 70 plus years. I would hope that the best team in college basketball (as the top seeding would demonstrate) would have a success rate closer to 50%. Plus the top seed winning has only happened 5 times in our life time (30 years old or younger) and once in the past 10 years. As the sport evolves the odds of winning as the top seed decrease. Once again...I would hope the best team in basketball would have better odds of winning the championship.

GMoney said...

Your arguments are invalid because Ice would rather have 13-8 tom izzo then the 1 seed!

Ugh, two one seeds at the same arena means shit games.

Drew said...

At least the 8/9 games would be good. But, yeah...the other two would be snoozers.

Also...for the Jersey Shore fans....Vinnie was sitting courtside at MSG last night for the Knicks game. The big stars obviously come out when the Pistons come to town.

Mr. Ace said...

Ya...29% sounds pretty good. Certainly not something you don't want.

And it's definitely not the best 65 teams in the tourney, or 68 teams as it is now.

But after Michigan wins on Thursday this will all be irrelevant.

I went to a set of NCAA tourney first rounders at ARCO Arena back when Mike Bibby and Miles Simon were on Arizona. They were the 1 seed and played against Nichols St. I'm UA was winning by 50 at halftime. Luckily, it was the last game of the day, so we left early. Two of those type games would be awful to attend.

OSU should do very well in the tournament. Nothing new to add to the conversation, they are a solid team.

Mr. Ace said...

I went and watched Illinois play Fairleigh Dickinson in a 1/16 matchup and it was fucking awesome. It was in Indy so 70% of the were IU fans and FDU was only down two at half. The entire place was into the game and Lange went and purchased a FDU shirt just piss off all the IU fans around us. It was fantastic. So although the 1/16 games likely are blowouts, there is a chance for a good game and a crazy atmosphere.

The Iceman said...

I look at tournament success G$, not regular season success. Some coaches just bring it come tourny time and Izzo is one of them...regardless of how much irrational hate you have for the man.
