A Plea To The NCAA

Dear NCAA Selection Committee,

I know that when push comes to shove, the opinions produced by this blog can make or break a team's tournament dreams. I know that all of you on the committee read this. I know that my thoughts do not fall on deaf ears. So allow me to draw my line in the sand and get a certain team into the tournament (and no, it is not my RedHawks).

The Northwestern Wildcats NEED to go dancing this year. Allow me to state my case...

Last night, I watched them go into West Lafayette and handle a healthy Purdue team that just beat Ohio State by 25 on Saturday. It was really never in doubt. The Cats have also beaten Florida State at home and AT Michigan State. Outside of the top ten or 15 teams, NO ONE can boast wins of that caliber. Not one team.

Sure, their record is 17-11. It could be better obviously. Their RPI going into last night's game was a pedestrian 81 with a strength of schedule of 68. They are only 8-9 in the Big Ten. I know all about this and it may be difficult to overlook. But don't get suckered into the bureaucratic mumbo jumbo.

Unless the Big Ten Network lied to me, Northwestern has 6 wins over the RPI top 50. SIX! There are bubble teams out there that don't even have 3. And, god dammit, there is no team in the country that plays harder and does more with less than Bill Carmody's boys in purple. Due to the academic standards, they can't recruit the blue chippers like Neon Bedeaux or Matt Nover. They are cranking out a good season on guts and heart.

Another factor that should be considered is that 17 wins is the most wins in school history. Can't you see how monumental this season is in Evanston? For God's sake, Northwestern HAS NEVER PLAYED IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT. Never. Now they finally have earned the right.

Carmody should garner recognition as national coach of the year. Kevin Coble is one of the best players that you've never heard of even if he does look like a gigantic tool. And keep in mind, you don't want to fuck over these kids because there is a good chance that one day they will end up being your boss.

This post may be moot if the Wildcats win in Columbus on Sunday and then win a game or two in the conference tournament. But it should not matter. Do the right thing, NCAA. I know you have it in you. When Selection Sunday rears it's beautiful head in a few weeks, remember that the Wildcats deserve to be there. They have paid their dues and taken their lumps, now it's time to throw them a bone. Davidson? Penn State? Maryland? Oklahoma State? Fuck them all. For once, how about rewarding those that actually are STUDENT-athletes.

I've said my piece on the topic. Now don't fuck it up, NCAA.

Go fuck yourself,

The Money Shot

Wow, G$ sticking up for a Big 10 team. I never thought I would see the day. Don't worry, NW's hopes will be buried under an avalnche of 3's by Mr. Jon Diebler on Sunday.

Michigan beat UCLA(neutral), Duke, Illinois, and Purdue. Suck it. And we still have to beat Minny to be able to even sniff the tourney. NW needs to win the Big Ten Tourney to get in. They don't deserve to get in any other way.

Ace, none of those wins were road games. I realize that NW is not on the bubble, but it is amazing what they have done this year with pretty much the exact same roster of Hickory High. Coble = Jimmy Chitwood

NW has never been to the tourney?! Wow, learn something new everyday.

I'm actually with ya on this NW thing. They are surprisingly deserving.

Mr. Ace...Michigan also got smoked by the Buckeyes both games this year. Insert "just like football" chant.

G$....What do you make of Peter King thinking there is a decent chance that T.O. suits up for the Redskins to stick it to Dallas.

I'm mentally preparing a T.O. post for tomorrow. Trying to grasp how I feel and what I want to say and how I can find a pic of T.O. without a shirt on.

The Fuckeyes also got swept by Illinois(lost by 18 at Ill) and Purdue(lost by 25 at Pur) and MSU(which should be expected)

And Drew, I believe you owe me a million dollars or whatever it was because you said you would bet that the Fuckeyes would finish in the top 4 of the Big Ten. Pay me in bud.

No mention of the the URI Rams? Why the disrespect G$, why?

Ace,

The Buckeyes didn't get swept by Purdue, they beat them in Columbus in overtime 80-72.

Mr. Ace, you've been nothing but wrong today. Why don't you go sit in the corner and think about what you've done.

Yeah, no shit, Ace, if you are going to make a retarded argument at least have your facts straight.

Watching Ohio State play this year, they have their ups and downs. Unfortunately for them, unless evan turner plays point guard, who do they have to take them further into the NCAA tourney. Without PG play you won;t win.

Lange, that's a good point and something that should concern OSU fans. They played their best ball pre-conference and have just sort of mailed-in the conference season evidenced by their 9-8 record.

As Thad Matta put it, "I know that we won't have anyone on the all-defense team this year". Hilarious.

I really believe that if they lose to NW on Sunday, they are out unless they make the conf. tourney finals. Their record in the last ten games can't be very good (I'm not going to look that up though).

The Buckeyes have lost to exactly ONE team outside the RPI Top 34 (NW # 70) and have the 27th toughest schedule in the nation.

We have a very solid bubble resume with zero bad losses.

Come on, Drew. You watch this team. Deep down you know that they are mediocre.

Agreed on the mediocrity of OSU and the lack of Point Guard. But, all of college B-ball mediocre. UNC was supposed to be the greatest team of all time with all of those guys returning and what they have lost like 4 or 5 games. I just dont see any great teams.

So, sure put NW in, hope they can get hot and have a good story. Because I just do not see there being a lot of quality basketball being played come tourney time.
