Smarch Madness I

Lousy Smarch weather...There is currently 16 inches of snow on the ground here in central Ohio with 4 more apparently coming. I spent yesterday (I'm writing the bulk of this on Sunday night) morning shoveling a shit-ton of snow and drinking Budweiser's with our condo's paid shovelling guy/pedophile. My back is killing me and the damn blizzard knocked out the power for a few hours yesterday. BUT! Due to being shut-in, I watched a ton of hoops this weekend. And for the next 5 Monday's, obviously through the Final Four, we will be talking nothing but college hoops here in our little segment called "Smarch Madness". And don't worry, if Mr. Plow shows up, I'm more than prepared...I've got the Plow King on speed dial. Let's get going...

Drake is for real - I've only seen Drake play twice this season. I watched them beat Butler in BB and also win the MVC tournament (with the cute moniker of Arch Madness). This team can play. If you can handle the Favre-ian media dick-sucking of former walk-on PG Adam Emmenecker, then this is the team that you should root for in the tournament. They shoot the three well, play tough defense, and are just a smart team. I really like the Bulldogs and, with the right draw, can easily make it into the 2nd weekend of the tournament.

Georgetown is not for real - I'm just going to come out and say it...the Hoyas suck. Yes, it was a nice win at home over Louisville eventhough they did their best to choke it away. But they play down to their competition every single game. Just look at their box scores from the past month, every game is tight and they have no shooters. NONE. JT3 has athletes out the ass, but none of them can score. If you can score 60 points on the Hoyas, the game is over, you won. Mark my words, G'Town is set as a potential 2 seed currently and if that holds true, they will be the first of the big seeds to get bounced. So to sum things up, I'm not a fan of Georgetown.

Praise for the Buckeyes - As you all know, I'm not a fan of the Buckeyes. They don't play any defense (zone doesn't count, that defense is for the lazy and cowardly...it's an admission of defeat), they shoot way too many three's, and their post guys disappear for games at a time. But I have to give them credit, they played two must-win home games against teams that are far superior and they came away with wins in both. Thad and the boys have put themselves right where they need to be...a "win and you're likely in" rematch with the overrated Spartans on Friday. If they lose, hello NIT, with a win, now we can start talking about an 11-12 seed. Should be interesting either way, but dammit, you are a good team when you don't settle for three's! Every team is better when they attack the rim. Don't fall in love with the deep jumper...that is the formula for a loss.

Damn Winthrop - The fucking Winthrop Eagles ruined what we all wanted...big 7'7" Kenny George dancing with his UNC-Asheville teammates. Oh well. Props also to Cornell, Belmont (they beat UC this season!), and Austin Peay (they should play Oral Roberts every year, it would be an immature idiot's dream come true).

Carolina/Duke is still great - Well, that was a fun one. THAT Carolina team can win a title. The team with Danny Green and Wayne Ellington playing fantastic and Ty Lawson running the show to perfection. I suppose now it's time to insert a Tyler Hansbrough sucks remark. My problem here is Duke, who I thought would make the Final Four until a few weeks ago. How is it that they haven't had a halfway decent big man since Carlos Boozer??? Does Coach K only recruit scrappy white guards? The fuck? As I said with the Buckeyes, QUIT SHOOTING THREE'S. Yes, when they are made, they are momentum shifters. But when you miss them, it cripples your mo' and leads to a ton of fast breaks for your opponents. When will Coach K learn that you need a post presence??? I don't get it. Enjoy winning two games and losing in the Sweet 16 again, Blue Devils.

Dick Vitale needs Degree - Did you see Vitale's pit stains and neck sweat on Saturday night!!! Insane. I heard he received a congratulatory text message from Gary Williams during the telecast.

Kent State is officially IN - That was a pretty sick finish last night as the Golden Flashes triumphed over local rival, Akron. Although they blew a 16 point second half lead, Al Fisher hit a game winning three with 2 seconds left to get Kent to the 25 win plateau. Let's just assume that the Flashes win one game in Cleveland (before losing to the RedHawks in the semis, yes, I'm banking on a win over both Buffalo and the Ohio's), at 26 wins and a 30 RPI, you can put them on the safe line. The MAC is getting two teams this year...let's just hope that the second isn't Akron or The Ohio's though. Oh and by the way, Kent can win a game or two in the tournament with the right draw.

Get well soon - Before I go, I would like to extend a giant get well soon to RedHawks head cheese, Charlie Coles. Coach is still in the hospital for unspecified reasons and has released a statement that he will not be back this season. From the outside, it doesn't sound good, but I wish him well. You are a King, Charlie!!!

See you all tomorrow...

agree. G-Town sucks and will not last long in this tourny. Yeah it does not sound good at all for your man Mr. Coles! Hope he gets well soon!

So, Miami of Ohio will be looking for a new coach next year? Sounds like an intriguing place to live. I may look into that.

Didn't know Coles was still in the hospital while I ripped on him in my blog but that could be the best news for you RedHawk fans. Aren't the undefeated without him? I still don't see them getting past OU though.

Dan Dakich is officially banned from this blog.

Beanie, the RedHawks are 2-1 with Jermaine Henderon at the helm (lost to Kent Tuesday night). We will beat OU...this has to be the 20th year in a row that Miami and OU will play in Cleveland.

Glad you mentioned that G$. It gave me something to do. Since 1980, OU and Miami have met just seven times in the MAC tournament, but have played each other in each of the past three year. Ohio won in 05 and 06 and Miami won last year. Overall, OU is 5-2 against Miami, including wins in the championship game in 94 and 85 (even though Ron Harper was MVP in 85). Hope that is some history there for you.

G$, couldn't agree more with more with this statement. Why do teams forget that attacking the rim is a sure way to score, get fouled, make defenses agsausted, etc.?

Did your Junior High coaches teach you that about the zone? They're right even though they were incompetant.

lmao @ Vitale needing Degree. I thought that I was one of few to see that. You know his sweat cures cancer, right?

(long pause)

...I guess that doesn't work for him
